Hanjer Biotech Energies gets USD 40 mn funding from European DFIs DEG and PROPARCO

Hanjer Biotech Energies (“Hanjer”), a waste recycling and resource recovery company having a unique technology to process mix municipal solid waste , has been granted a loan facility of USD 40 million - USD 20 million each by DEG – Deutsche Investitions- und Entwicklungsgesellschaft mbH (the German investment and development company), a subsidiary of KfW, and PROPARCO, the subsidiary of the French Development Agency - as a part of total debt facility amount of INR 2,908 million, which has been underwritten and solely arranged by YES Bank Ltd.

Under a tripartite agreement between Hanjer and the two European Development  Finance Institutions, DEG and PROPARCO, the 8.5 year loan amount will be utilized towards setting up multiple MSW (Municipal Solid Waste) processing plants totalling 5,000 TPD (tonnes per day) capacity wherein Hanjer will implement international environmental and social standards. Currently, Hanjer has 24 operating facilities across 19 cities in India, with an existing capacity of 9,100 TPD. Another 2,200 TPD capacity expansion is under implementation plus additional 3,000 TPD, at the bidding stage.
Dr. Irfan Furniturewala, Promoter, Hanjer Biotech Energies, said, “Urban infrastructure is a key sector for lending by developmental financial institutions such as DEG and PROPARCO. Waste Management and recycling is a critical activity across the world especially in urban India, which generates around 75,000TPD. Hanjer’s proven technology as well as 8 years of track record in the industry is a significant asset to India’s development. The additional 5,000 TPD processing facilities will enable city municipalities to process mixed municipal solid waste in a scientific and environmentally friendly manner.”

India faces major challenges in dealing with the increasing amount of MSW. PROPARCO and DEG are proud to support the expansion of a major player in the Indian MSW processing industry. Hanjer is pioneer in the use of innovative technology offering a multi-recycling product solution”, says Armin Albert, director of DEG’s representative office in India. The DEG signing took place within the framework of “Germany and India 2011-2012: Infinite Opportunities”, a programme series celebrating 60 years of diplomatic relations.  With a thematic focus on “StadtRäume – CitySpaces”, this programme series across India broaches the implications of rapid urbanisation and challenges posed by the pace of change in German and Indian cities” adds Armin Albert.
Climate change is at the heart of PROPARCO’s strategy in emerging countries. This operation will have significant impact on reducing the volumes of landfilled MSW and on enhancing the lndian waste management situation. It will make an important contribution to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and to avoid water contamination around municipal landfills” explains Marie-Hélène Loison, Deputy CEO of PROPARCO.
The World Bank estimates that India’s per capita waste generated in urban areas will grow from 0.2 – 0.6 kg to 1 kg per head per day by 2030. With growing quantum of waste, an increasing space crunch, combined with health implications and environmental norms getting more stringent, Hanjer’s proven technology for scientific processing and treatment of MSW and subsequent conversion into Bio-Compost, Green Fuel, Sand and recycled Plastic, is seen as a significant asset not just for India, but for other nations too. The 8.5 year term loan sanction to Hanjer, has been made by DEG and PROPARCO after a thorough audit of the Company’s current processes and compliance on environmental and social standards.
Through its innovative recycling and green resource recovery model, Hanjer helps municipalities reduce landfills by 80 per cent, thereby making a huge positive difference to the environment and lowering the risk of disease proliferation. Today, Hanjer is being approached by several developed and developing nations to help them manage and process their mixed municipal solid waste more efficiently.
