Maharashtra is the land of warriors and rich in many cultures and ethnicities. The land witnessed the great lives of kings and warriors and the traditional Maharashtrian jewellery is inspired from that era. The state of Maharashtra is famous for its artistic work and they have their famous traditional gold jewellery designs. These designs are not only famous among the Maharashtrians but these gold ornaments are loved worldwide.
Here is the list of some famous traditional Maharashtrian jewellery from top to bottom that is unique and loved worldwide:
Nath: A beautifully carved, differently shaped nose ring worn by the Marathi ladies on all the special occasions like weddings, festivals, family functions, and religious ceremonies. It is carved with pearls and pink or white stones.
Thushi: This piece of gold jewellery is a beautiful choker made with 22k Gold. It is worn at weddings by Maharashtrian brides. The traditional Thushi is originated in Kolhapur and made with gold beads with adjustable thread to tie around the neck.
Kolhapuri Saaj: This beautiful gold necklace set contains 21 engraved leaves as pendants. The 10 pendants represent Lord Vishnu’s 10 avatars, 8 pendants represent happiness and prosperity, 2 pendants have stones of emerald and ruby, and one is the “taviz”.
Vaaki: It is a beautiful armband decorated with floral motifs, embroidered with stones, crafted with 23-carat gold wire.
Putli Haar: It is a very different-looking gold necklace set in which a few rounds of gold coins are held together on a silk braided cord. It is also called a coin necklace or temple necklace and the coins are the symbol of wealth (Goddess Lakshmi).
Ambada: It is a hairpin festooned with pearls and gemstones worn on the hair bun by the Maharashtrian bride.
Kudya: A beautifully carved, pearl-studded earrings made with gold available in various color combinations.
Tode: These are gold kadas or bangles made of approximately 250 – 300 gm Gold.
Chooda: These are the green color glass bangles adorned by Maharashtrian brides. The color must be green as it is the symbol of fertility and prosperity. The bangles are made in both hands in odd numbers.
Belpan: It is carved of Bel leaves that have a religious meaning and are offered to Lord Shiva as an honor.
Jodvi: The ring-shaped toe ring made of silver is given to the bride by her mother-in-law. It is the way of welcoming a newlywed bride into her new family.
Gold Mangalsutra: A traditional Maharashtrian gold mangalsutra is made of black and gold beads connected with a bowl-shaped pendant. The traditional beads called Maniwati beads are very simple and have no pattern carved on them.
Challa: It is a keychain worn on the waist of the woman called a waist keychain. It is made of gold-plated copper or oxidized silver embossed with stones and floral.
